OUR SUCCESS STORIES

Joe* contacted LSEM in May 2008 to request assistance with his MO HealthNet for Aged, Blind, and Disabled (MHABD)application as he was denied benefits because the Medical Review Team determined he was not totally and permanently disabled.

Joe is a 50 year old single male with a seventh grade education, no income and had approximately $100.00 in his checking account when he applied for benefits. He lives with his parents and receives assistance from them with personal needs. He has special training in tree trimming, but was not currently employed at the time of his application.

The investigation into his case revealed that he suffered from several severe and recurrent medical issues. And, after many hours of hard work his LSEM attorney was able to reach a settlement with the Family Support Division to re-explore Joe's eligibility & provide a psychiatric examination. However, they once again determined that he was not eligible.

The attorney then requested an administrative hearing. Luckily evidence was submitted in lieu of attending the hearing and the final Decision & Order reversed the original outcome. The MHABD application was approved, and Joe's Medicaid coverage was backdated to December 2007.
