Special Projects Unit

LSEM’s Special Projects Unit was established in 1991 in response to the widespread and controversial AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. LSEM’s Special Projects Unit remains the only legal aid service in St. Louis specializing in the legal needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. LSEM has represented low-income people living with HIV/AIDS for over 16 years in cases related to health coverage and healthcare access.

Currently, the Project concentrates its practice in the following areas: Social Security Disability (SSD), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, Medicare,  simple estate planning, continuation of private health insurance and other health-related matters such as COBRA and HIPAA, FMLA, and consumer and employment matters that affect access to health care.

The Special Projects Unit works collaboratively with other AIDS Service Organizations (ASOs) and community groups to ensure that individuals living with HIV/AIDS have access to holistic services.
